Theme and scope
Wirapuru, Latin American Journal of Ideas Studies, was launched in 2020 as a biannual scientific publication (June and December of each year) with peer review (double-blind), published by Ariadna Ediciones (Chile). In its first five years, it was sponsored by the "Jornadas de Estudios de las Ideas" (Interinstitutional Network based in Chile), under the coordination of Eduardo Devés, who served as Honorary Director of the journal, while Andrés Kozel was in charge of executive management.
The main purpose of Wirapuru has been to articulate and project the production of theoretical and empirical research on ideas, considering a broad and pluralistic register, not limited to the historiographical perspective (history of ideas, history of intellectuals, history of concepts, literary history, cultural history, philology), but also open to contributions from political and social philosophy; from studies of culture, literature, and aesthetics; from discourse and representation analysis; from the sociology of intellectuals and ideologies; from studies on academic-intellectual institutions, from studies of myths, mentalities, and worldviews, from cognitive sciences, from applied studies of ideas, from eidetic foresight, etc.
The new era of Wirapuru, which began in 2025, aims to continue and deepen the work carried out by the journal in its first five years. Currently, the publication is based at the Institute for Human Development of the National University of General Sarmiento (province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) and is part of the activities of the Discussion and Reflection Group on Latin American Thought and University Internationalization at that university, which is made up of teachers and researchers from various institutions in the Argentine university and scientific system.
The purpose of this new stage is to build a space for reflection and dissemination of thought developed in Latin America, promoting the production of theories, concepts, categories, images, and narratives aimed at thinking not only about our region, but also about the world. Its proposal is to foster situated thinking, but not with the aim of retreating into themes that could be considered "our own" or into supposed local eccentricities; rather, the publication's objective is to contribute to a type of reflection that addresses the specific dilemmas of Latin America, knowing its capacity to explain its own problems, but also to provide tools to elucidate, with a universal meaning, the times in which we live.
In this sense, although Wirapuru is a journal dedicated to nurturing the vast and heterogeneous field of social sciences, this new era is particularly interested in reviving the Latin American tradition of the essay. It assumes that writing and reflection from the margins can forge critical and creative knowledge, while also drawing on the best contributions from scientific disciplines such as sociology, political science, history, anthropology, communication sciences, and geography, among others.
The magazine's target audience is the community of specialists linked to the study of ideas in Latin America and the rest of the world. It is worth noting that a related initiative of this magazine is the book collection "Pensadores y Pensadoras de América Latina" (Thinkers of Latin America), published by Ediciones UNGS, dedicated to reconstructing the important legacy of ideas and theories found in the work of numerous thinkers in our region.
Wirapuru accepts contributions in various formats and considers the possibility of reissuing classic materials. It also allows for translations of contributions and debates on specific topics considered to be of high interest by the editorial team.
Those who submit contributions to Wirapuru must do so in accordance with the journal's general editing guidelines (see separate document). Submitting a contribution implies acceptance that it will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. Submitted contributions must not be in the process of being published in any other medium, whether print or electronic (journals, books, websites).
