On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the seminar on university structures delivered by Darcy Ribeiro at the University of the Republic during his exile in Uruguay, and of the subsequent publication of The Necessary University—and in light of the abundant evidence of an academic globalization that is, at the very least, inadequate—it is worth asking ourselves: What does the necessary university look like today?

We invite submissions on ideas regarding the university, teaching, research, outreach, or the many ways in which the university engages with its local communities; on desirable (or undesirable) forms and experiences of university internationalization; on thinkers from the region who have reflected on the Latin American university; on new technologies and sovereignty, on legacies, challenges, and open horizons, and on utopian visions of the university, in the realm of ideas, that bring us closer to the university we need in the real world.
