Goodbye to the State. The sacrifices of La Ciudad Futura

The article analyzes the relationship between left-wing culture and the state in the early years (1986–1991) of the journal La Ciudad Futura (LCF), published in Buenos Aires as the organ of the Socialist Culture Club. Emerging in the context of Argentina’s democratic transition, LCF became an intellectual forum that placed democracy at the center of the left’s political culture. The text examines how the journal advanced a critique of statism—understood as the authoritarian legacy of twentieth-century left movements—thus articulating the conceptual opposition between democracy and the state. In this way, the redefinition of socialism as a societal rather than state-centered practice appeared as a modernizing proposal that deliberately distanced itself from some of the major theoretical problems that had structured leftist debates in previous decades. In light of the following decades, the question remains open as to what this shift enabled, and what it foreclosed.
