Liberation, Community and Future in the Foundation of the Organization of African Unity (1963)

This article examines the speeches of African leaders at the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. It analyses the ideas of liberation, community and the building of a common future expressed at that event. The article found that the idea of an African community mobilized geographical, cultural, historical and political factors, as well as formulations about a future of freedom, development, security and prosperity for the continent. It is concluded that Pan-Africanism as studied here has a strong humanist component, connecting the struggle of black and African peoples to the common cause of all humankind, and expressing that the emancipation of these peoples will be the emancipation of the entire human race.
