Ignacio Ellacuría’s Philosophy of Liberation and the historicization of Human Rights

The subject of this article is the historicization of Human Rights in Ignacio Ellacuría. What is meant by this is not their relativization, but precisely their universalization. In the concept of the historicization of human rights, Ellacuría’s epistemology (sentient intelligence), metaphysics, and definition of the object of philosophy are manifested: historical reality. To understand Ellacuria’s epistemology and metaphysics, it is particularly important to consider his reception of Xavier Zubiri’s thought. On the other hand, the concept of the historicization of Human Rights is quite practical: whoever recognizes the truth of Human Rights must also assume responsibility for their global realization; otherwise, Human Rights would remain a relative truth that, in fact, only applies to some privileged people to the detriment of others.
