The Parliamentary Investigative Commission on the ARA San Juan: Intersections between Families, Officials and Experts in Response to a Critical Event

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the central role acquired by the families of the victims of the sinking of the ARA San Juan submarine, which occurred in November 2017, in the establishment and development of the Bicameral Special Investigative Commission on the Disappearance, Search and Rescue Operations of the vessel. We are particularly interested in examining the formation of the parliamentary commission as a state device for assistance and reparation for the victims, highlighting the relationships that the families have established with various public officials from the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches, as well as with members of the Armed Forces. In this sense, the work delves into the active role of victims in contemporary Argentina and aims to contribute to its field of study, as well as to the state practices of managing vulnerability and suffering.
