Abstract

The Urban Guards constitute teams dependent on the security areas of the municipalities, which emerged in our country in the first decade of the 21st century as one of the responses of local governments to “insecurity” problems. Although they were made up of a diversity of worker profiles, in the Urban Guards of the Buenos Aires suburbs the presence of “retired” people stood out, people whose work history referred to some Security Force. The purpose of this article is to study the work trajectories of retirees in the Buenos Aires Urban Guards based on two witness cases, the municipalities of Avellaneda and Lanús, between the years 2009 and 2023. Based on an ethnographic approach carried out in both municipalities, we will see that the missions, daily tasks and professional aesthetics of the different Urban Guards present great diversity, despite having been created with similar objectives.
