Abstract

After the defeat of Mauricio Macri government in 2019 Primary Elections, several notorious journalists who had sympathized or explicitly supported the ruling party shifted away and for momentarily they became critical voices. Confronting this reposition we may inquire: what’s the cost of getting associated with a diminished political power? Taking this question as a starting point, this paper analyzes how these truncated turns present and update historical deontological tensions throughout the relationship of journalism and politics. Hence, from a socio-historical perspective we assume a double view centered both in the recent history of the journalistic field and in its current configuration. Based on the analysis of exemplary cases, we show how the dilemmas of political commitment and professional independence are conditioned and affected by the challenges of media visibility and the settings of polarized political scenarios.
