Abstract

There are numerous topics of debate in which a reciprocal influence between Marxist theory in Europe and Latin America can be observed. One of the areas in which this influence can be explored is the problem of development and dependency, a topic of discussion that resonated across Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. One publication that acknowledged this debate was the British magazine New Left Review (NLR). Based on a systematic survey of this publication, this paper addresses its reception, investigating the place that the phenomenon of the‘Third World’ had in it. It also focuses on reflecting on how this aspect was presented and treated in the British review. In this way, the article problematises the dilemma of asymmetry in the production and circulation of knowledge; and, in particular, seeks to highlight the role given by the NLR to Latin American intellectual powerhouses (and their references) as spaces for the production of theory, based on dilemmas addressed and weighed up by the review itself in the 1960s and 1970s.
