Abstract

The article focuses on selected representative African social philosophies that emphasized social justice. The original contribution of the article is the interpretation of these social philosophies from the perspective of two interconnected aspects with regard to their current revitalization: (a) taking into account the basing in intersubjective relations of solidarity in a community for (b) development with an emphasis on strategic elements, specifically on public ownership of critical infrastructure and other similar economic characteristics. The first section of the article analyses Julius Nyerere’s concept of social philosophy and author’s intentions to apply it to practice in the context of the development of Tanzania, especially after gaining the independence of the country. Then, the second section proceeds similarly with respect to social philosophy of Kwame Nkrumah within the framework of the development in Ghana. The interpretation comparatively shows similarities and differences in the works of these authors and places their local and national activities in the context of Pan-African and global interactions. The conclusion, in addition to a summary of the main ideas of the article, also formulates a possible update not only in many countries of the Global South.
