Those Who Cry When They Laugh: Chaplin’s Bittersweet Humor in Latin American Avant-Garde

After reviewing, through quotations from Gorky and Woolf, how avant-garde literature defends the narrative transformations introduced by cinema, we examine the connection between Chaplin and Kafka proposed by Walter Benjamin. There, he proposes a humor that is far from joy, a humor critical of the social order whose tensions it exposes. We then compare three distinct readings, within the Latin American avant-garde, of that ambivalent humor proposed by Chaplin: Vicente Huidobro’s, who celebrates in Chaplin an angelic life whose joy surpasses sadness; César Vallejo’s, for whom Chaplin creates a socialist and tragic art that proposes the political overcoming of pain; and Roberto Arlt’s, interested in showing how Chaplin reveals to the working classes the possibility of beauty amidst pain.
