The role of publisher women in the circulation of ideas and translation from Latin America to the international environment. The case of Charco Press publishing house

Abstract

Starting from the current conditions of cultural and intellectual production in
Latin America, we analyse here the role of Latin American women publishers, considering
the internationalised modalities of life and cultural trajectories, mainly through the practice
of translation We focus on the trajectory of Carolina Orloff, an Argentinean researcher and
publisher based in Edinburgh, who has been at the helm of the publishing project Charco
Press since 2016. We seek to explore a series of questions: How did an editorial catalog of
these characteristics emerge in the United Kingdom? What are the motivations behind a
cultural company like this? What influences from Argentina are expressed in the publishing
project to make Latin American literature visible abroad, particularly in translation into a
hyper-central language such as English? How important is it in the process of “opening the
way” in the international literary field for women writers? We used both quantitative and
qualitative data, taking into account the grid elaborated from the translations of the Sur
Programme between 2010 and 2020, a tour of the publisher's website and social networks,
and interviews with its founder.
