The enchanted beings in Straparola, Basile and Cascudo: the wonderful in Italian and Brazilian popular tales

The Brazilian Luís da Câmara Cascudo (Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, 1898-
1986), in a note at the end of the tale “O peixinho encantado”, published in his book Contos
Tradicionais do Brasil, makes reference to the tales “ Pietropazzo”, by the Italian Giovanni
Francesco Straparola (Caravaggio-Venezia, Lombardy-Veneto, Italy, 1480-1557), present in his
book Le piacevoli notti (The Pleasant Nights) and “Peruonto” by Giambattista Basile (Giuliano-
Naples, Campania, Italy 1566-1632), present in his work Lo cunto de li cunti o Pentamerone, in
order to demonstrate the relationship that the Brazilian short narrative traces with the two
Italian writers, opening the door to the study of the manifestation of the wonderful in the three
tales and presenting aspects similar that lead to reflections on issues related to oral transmission
and the importance of storytellers and their relationship with writers in general, in the axis of
popular culture. Thus, we study the homologies and divergences between the three tales, having
as an axis the narrative paths of each protagonist and the characters that represent the
manifestation of wonder or enchantment, and we start from Straparola's tale, to arrive at
Basile's, and, finally, in Cascudo. For that, the studies of Sperber (2009), Volobuef (2011) and
Michelli (2020), among other scholars, serve as a basis. We aim to reflect on the expression of the wonderful in the Comparative Literature, since we compare three short stories from
different times and nationalities that bring many approximations and few distances, to reflect on
the role of storytellers and writers.
